Anita Roddick, 1942-2007

Anita Roddick, founder of The Body Shop chain of personal care goods, died yesterday in Chicester, England at age 64. I want to remember her because in the 1970s, she was one of the first persons to make sure the materials used to manufacture her goods were fair to the upstream workers and were not cruel to animals. Today, we consider such ethical business practices reasonable (if far from universal) and many shoppers include ethical considerations when deciding on what to buy — but Roddick was at or near the front of the pack.
