Favorite hosting company, registrar?

For those out there who administer web sites, which are your favorite domain registrars and hosting companies? I’m always on the look out for new vendors. In particular, those with a good mix of ethical business practices, good value and excellent customer service. (GoDaddy doesn’t make the cut, because of what its owner has stood for.) For hosts, I prefer those that run Linux servers.

  1. I defer to your wisdom, of course — and so have stuck with Verve Hosting for several years. If you think there are good reasons to look elsewhere, I’d love to hear it.

  2. I have heard good things about “A Small Orange”, an Atlanta-based provider, and I plan to migrate my webs there next year unless further feedback is not so positive.

  3. My partner and I have a total of six sites on Deerfield Hosting — a small company that has given us good tech support and service at low prices. My main site has not gone down once in a year and a half (although I have suffered from two attacks on the PHP database, one of which was caused by me not upgrading blog software). Carol runs her email through them, and every once in a while loses a little email because the server goes down, but not often. About fifty bucks a year for hosting and registration (hunt for the “Starter Plan,” which is more than adequate for most non-commercial sites). Uses the cPanel interface, which I have come to like, and a decent set of admin tools (all I need, that’s for sure). We have no desire to switch.

My congregation uses UUism.net. The site has never gone down in a year and a half, but the prices are twenty percent more. Uses the Ensim interface, which I do not like — hard to track down the source of 404 errors, for example. Still, it’s reliable and inexpensive, with fast tech support.
