Thanks to colleague Y.N.E. for reminding me that today is John Murray‘s birthday (b. 1741).
It is also my mother’s birthday, which is perhaps why I forget. Happy birthday, Mom! Happy birthday, John!

Happy birthday, Mother Wells!
I’ve sometimes wondered if some of these days should be treated like Saint Days in the Episcopal and Catholic churches. I have seen a few Universalist churches that do something special around Clara Barton’s birthday (often a recognition of nurses, and nursing as ministry).

While we’re being geeky Universalist historians, I’m sure I read somewhere that John Murray was born in Alton. My question is, is this Alton in Staffordshire, near Stoke-on-Trent, now the home of Alton Towers theme park?
No, he was from Alton in Hampshire. He was baptized in the parish church: http://www.stlawrencealton.org/ (A past generation of Universalists placed a memorial plaque there.)
