Skills wanted: Setting up a legal defense fund

ChaliceChick asked how.

One anonymous comment offered an outline answer.

But the question remains — with detail — how does one set up a legal defense fund? Are they covered under 501c3 as the commentor states? Always, sometimes, rarely, never?

This is exectly the kind of thing that involved citizens — and clergy in particular — should know before it is needed.

Please comment if you know.
